—o — facing The local horse Takely was a competitor at Dannevirke yesterday, but failed to run prominent in the Scurry. ... Horses in work in this district: A. White has South Star and Brenda; J. O’Neill has Concussion, Grey Goose, Torere, and Captain Kidd. There were good attendances at the Dannevirke races on Wednesday and Thursday, this district contributing a fair quota. A few sports hereabouts returned with more cash than sufficed to meet ex’es; while a few are not now warm admirers of the steeds they supported. The best dividend (£8 4s 6d; on the first day was paid by Lord Soult in the Electric Hack Handicap. Mr G. Hunter’s Mystification annexed the Dannevirke Cup of £2OO, paying £4 12s. Mr Hunter is president of the club, and the win was received with three cneers. Elorio won the hack hurdles, Red Cross the Makirikiri hack race, Splendid- Idea the trial hack race, Clem the'fahoraite hack welter, and Declination the Plying Stakes. The sum of £8122 passed ‘through the totaisator. The largest dividend yesterday was paid by Scenery in the Tapuata Hack Welter, £7 Us 6d. Poly antbus won the Autumn Handicap, paving investors £3 18s During the two days the investments on the totalisator amounted to £16,971 an increase of £2310, as compared with last year. Tartan won the Australian Cup. Napier Park races next Wednesday and Thursday. Nominations for Waipukurau races close on Monday' next. Cricket Airangements are being made for a match to be played at V> aipukurau on AVednesday next net ween the representatives of the Hawke s Bay sub-union (comprising the clubs between Dannevirke and Waipukurau) and a team representing the Napier clubs. The Melbourne Cricket Club’s team’s march against Southland was a farce. The home team batted first. They were disposed of for 99 runs. Armstrong was caught for 335 runs and Melbourne’s first innings closed for 536. Hits for 4 were the order. The match concluded in miserably cold weather, the visitors winning by an innings and 359 runs. The scores were : Southland 99 and 78, M.C.C. 536 (Armstrong 335). Stifle-shooting The present Trenthain meeting constitutes a record in attendance, 428 riflemen taking part. Favourable weather having prevailed, the shooting has been good. Some of the Waipawa representatives won prizes. It is expected the meeting will terminate on Monday. The following Waipawa men are prize-takers — Capt. Collett, Corporals Miller, Cullen, Peters, and Privates Williams and Hopkins. Present indications are that Private T. Marrett, of Taranaki, has a good chance of winning the championship.
