—O-0 — \ GENERAL. King Alfonso has officially informed his Ministry of his betrothal to Princess Ena of Battenburg, niece of King Edward. The wedding will take place on June 2nd, at the Church of San Germino el Real. The profits made by King Leopold out of his trading in the Congo Eree State since 1896 are estimated at seventy million francs. The Boxers who destroyed the Presbyterian mission at Changchafu also destroyed the Catholic mission at Chanpu. The total damage is estimated at ten thousand pounds. Owing to the rise in the price of of leather several thousand boot and shoe manufacturers and retailers are forming an association to increase the prices of their goods. An exciting tragedy occurred at Sydney on the main thoroughfare Newtown, by which a policeman lost his life. The murderer killed himself after shooting at several of those seeking to capture him. The tragedy was committed by Tommy, a native of Tanna, New Hebrides, who ran amok, and shot the policeman. Natives near Richmond, in the south of Natal, announced their refusal to pay poll-tax. Two armed natives were arrested. Porty armed Zulus, however, ambushed a party of police, and the ringleader contemptuously struck Inspector Hunt on the face with the flat of an assegai. Inspector Hunt thereupon shot the Zulu dead. A melee ’ ensued, in the course of which the inspector and a trooper were killed. A waterspout burst on the Rock and Pillar range at about 6.30 yesterday evening, washing away the fomuation of the Otago Central for a distance of three '■chains. A goods train which left ' Dunedin in the afternoon was unable to proceed beyond Middlemarch. In the Divorce Court, Wellington, before the Chief Justice, Annie Jane Olsen petitioned for “the dis- ■ solution of her marriage with Haus I Jajfob Olsen, on the ground that I hehad misconducted himself with ■ Wilhelmina Munroe Archer, a H married woman living apart from H her husband, Ben jamin Archer. In H a second suit, the last-named per- ■ son sought a divorce from Wihel- ■ znina Munroe Archer, on the ground Hof her misconduct with Hans Jacob
Olsen. Mrs Archer resisted this application, on the ground that her husband had committed adultery with a married woman named Smith. His Honour reserved judgment.
