THE RIVAL CAPTAINS.

—o — D. Gallaher, the captain of the New Zealand football team, is, like the rest of the members of the team, a thundering good sportsman. When I found him after the match (writes one of the Cardiff reporters) he was shaking Gwyn Nicholls lieartily by the hand and telling him in a manner that was evidence of the speaker’s sincerity ‘ that the best team had won. Nicholls heartily reciprocated the feeling, and then the few of us who were present witnessed the rival captains changing jerseys. Gallaher was wearing the red dragon - adorned raiment of the "Welsh when I asked him for an opinion on the match. “It was a rattling good game, played out to the bitter end, with the result that the best team won.” Is there any point about the defeat which you regard as unsatisfactory ? “No,” was the reply; “as I - said before the better team won, and I am cun tent.” What of the refereeing? Have you any opinion favourable or otherwise to express ? Gallaher smiled as lie replied, “I have always made it a point never to express a view regarding the referee in any match in which I have played, so you must excuse me.” THE WELSH CAPTAIN. Gwyn Nicholls, looking radiantly happy, wore the black jersey of the New Zealand captain, and was drinking a cup of tea with evident satisfaction, when I asked him for his views. “ There really was practically nothing between the teams,” he said. “The real difference appeared to be that we took advantage of our only opportunity to score, and the New Zealanders didn’t.” . Any other point ? “ Well, I think the fielding of our men was certainly superior on the day’s form.”
