THE COACH ROAD TO WELLINGTON.

♦ Tho following petition to the Honorable the Legislative Council, and the Honorable the Houso of Representatives, of tho Colony of New Zealand, is now in course of circulation in Auckland for the purpose of receiving signatures : — " The humble petition of the undersigned Inhabitants of .the Provinco of Auckland, in the Colony of New Zealand, sheweth :— l. That the establishment of complete communication by coach between Aucklaud, Taupo and Wellington, would at the presont time conduce greatly to the security and commercial prosperity of the colony. 2. That the making of such a road would be the means of opening up communication with the Tuhua countr}', where, probably, at no distant date, a large and important goldfield may be established. 3. That your petitioners are assured that no objection to such line of rond would be made by the native owners of the land through whioh it would pass.

4. That the whole distance from Cambridge to Taupo would not much exceed one hundred miles, and that the general nature of the country is of such a character as to present no engineering difficulties of any moment. Furiher, that coach communication betwfen Auck land and Cambridge, and Napier and Taupo, is already complete, and thus a considerable portion of the road between Auckland aud Wellington is even nowavailable for traffic. Your petitioners, therefore, respectfully request that steps jnay be taken with as little delay as possible to complete the line of road above referred to. And your petitioners will ever pray, &c." The subject matter of the foregoing petition is of very great .importance to Auckland. It is long since wo announced that Messrs Quick had stated the route to be in every way practicable. Nothing is now wanting but some small amount of work to complete the connection, and we are informed that the sum of £000 would be ample for the carrying out of all thut is required. Wo do not suppose that the Assembly will hesitate a moment about the matter. — Herald.
