A BANK OF EMPIRE.

SUGGESTION BY FINANCIAL NEWS. Pres* Association.—Telegraph.—Copyright. Received November 10, 8.5 a.m. LONDON, November 9. The Financial News advocates a Bank of Empire for centralising the machinery for issuing colonial loans. If a colony now contemplates borrowing it is practically compelled to, accept the terms its bank dictates. The Empire Bank’s managers and directors would be able -to standardise colonial credit. The News adds: Mr Fisher’s Commonwealth Bank is no step in this direction, since it is destined to compete with existing institutions, and it is almost inevitable that the experiment will end in disaster. NonGovernment banks are taxed to keep their blundering competitor on its ricketty feet.
