In those days of the arising of innumerable “white' hopes,” and their apparently inevitable shattering at the hands of their coloured brothers, it may not be amiss to mention that Wanganui appears in a fair way to produce an asnirant. The lad in question for he is still of verv tender years—had formerly been of a'peaceful turn of mind, until a juvenile quarrel with a boy about twice his size awoke the latent spark. After some persuasion, the small boy consented to meet his larger opponent. who he quickly hammered into a state of tears and;submission. Then a still bigger brother of the vanquished expressed a desire to retrieve the family honour, and ho, on a recent evening, measured skill with the diminutive enemy, only to come off dccidedlv second best. The affair has apparently developed into something of a vendetta, for some half-dozen friends and relations of the defeated nugilists have sent in challenges, all of which hav* been promptly accepted by the present champion. The encounters are sot down for early dates. Verily, wo live iu stiripnn* times! 3
