A committee of the House has opened an inquiry regarding the connection of the cx-Secretary of State, Mr. Poster E, H. Conger (late Minister for China) with the payment of £70,000 sterling to the heirs of General Ward, who was killed in the Chinese rebellion in 1862. The moneyit is alleged, came out of the Boxer indemnity fund. It is stated that great influence was brought to bear on Prince Ghing to allow the forty years’ old claim to be paid from the recently created fund.
