SILVER WEDDING.

On Saturday last- Mr and Mrs" C. J. McCarthy* celebrated" ‘their • silver wedtli;4>. Advantage -was token- of the occasion by their many friends to pay a surprise visit to.thejr Hbtelj and to present them with a'-'solid silver tea' and codec service of very chaste design. Air W. E. Tuck;'who has been ■ associated with Mr McCarthy in the Hotel business in Wanganui for nearh T 20 years, made the presentation. He referred to the high, esteem in which Mr. McCarthy was held by all classes. of the community, and to the unblemished reputation which he had maintained in Wanganui throughout his long residence here. It was such men as he who made a town significant. His kindliness and integrity had made .him known throughout the district as, a,pattern in the business in which he was engaged. These qualities made for the highest citizenship. The congratulations of his many ■friends on. this happy, occasion, -were sincere and were coupled,,with, the,.hope that ho and Mrs McCarthy' might enjoy many, more years of ‘ happigpss, prosperity and usefulness.

Messrs L. Hogovird' and G. Swan also spoke and associated, themselves with the : high. tribute Mr Tiick had paid to the sterling and amiable~qnalities of Mr and Mrs McCarthy,.;. ■ ■ Mr McCarthy .expressed for himself arid his wife ..the pleasure, -that-this sponj.tanepus exhibition-of .good friendship and -.good ..feeling -had -given' them. He had , just, gone- on , his-way ever keeping before, him standards of conduct "and feeling which he hoped he would"never'allow to be obscured. It was a happy moment for himself and his -wife to have around thorn so many friends with such kind hearts. He zfelt-that-this was the richest possession in life. He would not willingly suffer'.-; this -to bo- lost. > Throughout, the many years of his residence here he had ' been the recioient of many acts of kindness, and it would bo his happy aim to endeavour to repay them. The proceedings were most' cordial, and made this occasion eventful in the annals of thaj McGaiauy family. Many telegrams of congratulations from friends abroad, and from friends throughout the Dominion, were received by Mr and Mrs McCarthy, whoso family gave them a handsome silver memento, and many presents from kind friends in the district added to the pleasure of the recipients.
