MINING ITEMS.
[iKANTJAHtTA HEEAED.J
New Excelsior.—Another mining company under the style of the Ixcelsior Quartz Mining Company Limited, is now under registration, the scene of operations being Italian Gully, and the nominal capital £2U,000 in £1 shares. Ajax.—The manager has left for Melbourne, whence he proceeds to obtain
a 12 to 16-horse power engine, with winding and pumping gear, to work the present level, and to sink the shaft a further depth of 1500 to 2000 feet (?) The plant is expected to be on the ground within two months, in which case considerable despatch will have to be exercised. Keep-it-Dark.—The water in shaft still gives trouble and prevents the contractors pushing down the remaining 40 feet of sinking. Independent.—The last fifty feet contract has been completed. The claim is held in great favor by many, and a number of scrip have recently changed hands—purchased by the supposed " knowing ones."
Energetic.—The machine is now crushing, and will be kept going until Christmas. Mr Ross is the new manager. Westland. —The plates look well considering the quantity of stone put through, and amply justify the opinion long since formed that the present will be the best crushing ever held at this battery.
Golden Eleece.—There is sufficient stone available to keep both the contractors and the machine going until Christmas. Andekson's. —The new centre for wheel is at Reefton, but the ford at the bluff was on the 28th ult, too deep for passage of drays. The main shaft is to be sunk on the reef an additional 50 feet, and an up-cast driven from the 60-foot level to the old tunnel. This level has been carried north upwards of 100 feet, most of the distance without the reef, though occasionally blocks of stone varying from six to twelve inches thick were taken out. At the north end, where the rise is to be made, the reef is twelve inches thick, and it is known that there is a good reef above. meetings.
