AGRICULTURAL LEASES.
[WESTrORJ 1 EVENING STAT?.]
The Provincial Executive notify that the 20th clause of the Agricultural Lease Regulations, having reference to cancellation for non-improvement, will henceforth be strictly enforced. It has been found necessary to do this in consequence of the wide extent of land taken up and held for speculative purposes. ' Land jobbers or land robbers, whichever term is most applicable, will find the clause referred to difficult of evasion. It reads thus:— " Every certificate and lease shall be subject to the conditions following, that is to say, that if the land be transferred without the sanction or authority of the Superintendent, or if planting, cultivation, or other permanent improvement ho not commenced within three months after the issue of such certificate or lease ; or if one-eighth iu acreage of the land be not planted, cultivated, or otherwise improved within twelve months from the date of any such certificate or lease; or if at any time during the currency of the lease, the land shall bo neglected for a period of bix months ; or if the rent be not paid on the days appointed for payment thereof, the certificate or lease may be cancelled, and the interest of the holder of the certificate, or the lessee, as the case may be, absolutely forfeited ; and in every case where such conditions shall not bo expressed in any certificate or lease, the same shall he implied therein respectively." The reform thus commenced should be followed up by au equal degree of strictness iu respect to Gold Mining Leases.
