BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting 1 of the Council was held on Wednesday evening. Present—The Mayor, and Crs Corr, Roche, Stitt, Munson, Munro, and , Watson. CORRESPONDENCE. From Provincial Secretary, notifying ; departure of immigrants from Nelson on the lGth instnnt. Prom Under-Secretary, asking that copy of letter vv? M'Leods quarry should !v »• lit to the Engineer-in-Chief. h'vom the Provincial Secretary, intimating that as soon as stone barg'-s are at the disposal of Harbormaster Leech, snags in rive? Buller should be removed. From E. F. Tizard, stating on behalf of property holders that they ' wished
to make 11 chains of street in Queen street, from Disraeli street, by clearing" the whole width, digging drains and metalling for sixteen feet, and offering to pay one-third of the estimated cost, £l2O, and requesting that the Council would undertake the work as soon as possible. From the Provincial Secretary, acknowledging receipt ol letter covering resolutions parsed at meeting held on the 21st, instant, and entirely concurring with the meeting in desiring the early completion of the main ro;ui between Westport and the Lyel!, and stating iliat the Government had already decided to wish forward the works, under the £50,000 loan, with all convpnient speed, and that the Provincial Secretary would bring* the letter and enclosure before Executive Council at the first opportunity. From C. H. W. Bowen, Clerk of the R.M. Court, acknowledging receipt of letter re payment of fines recovered under the Municipal Corporations Act. From Under - Secretary, Public Works Department, acknowledging receipt of copy of resolutions passed at public meeting; and in reply stating that the Piovincial authorities were calling for tenders for a dray rond from Nine Mile to Ohika, and further tiiat the Minister ol Public Works had given directions with a view to the formation of a dray road from the Lower to Upper Ohika. Thus the spirit of the request contained in the resolutions is being carried out. Cr Stilt proposed, and the Mayor seconded—" That Mr Tizard's letter be received, and his request acceded to in so far as regards the clearing of the street only. Amendment by Cr Monro, seconded by Cr Corr—" That inasmuch as Mr Tizard's letter is the only application received, it be acknowledged, and held over until the next regular meeting, in order that time be allowed to receive other applications under the subsidy proposals." For the amendment, Crs Munro. Corr, Watsou, and Munson voted ; and
for the original motion, the Mayor, and Grs Roche and Stitt. The amendment was carried. A letter from Mr E. Evans, re drainage and sewerage, was received, and the Clerk instructed to convey the thanks of the Council. The other letters, as read, were received. GENERAL BUSINESS. No report was received from the Pnhlic Works Committee re Pakington street. Henley street contract. —Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Stitt, and carried—''That the Public Works Committee be empowered to arrange the matter in dispute with the contractor, in order that the Work may be completed in accordance with resolution of the Council.'' Proposed by Cr Munro, seconded by the Mayor, and carried—" That the Provincial Engineer be requested to prepare specifications and a schedule of prices for clearing the streets within the Borough, in accordance with arrangements for employment of immigrant labor under the subsidy proposal." Proposed by Cr Munson, seconded by Cr Watson, and carried—" That in the opinion of this Council, the streets should be cleared twenty feet wide in the centre by cutting the timber level with the surface, and the balance—the full width of the street—to be cut stump high, and the whole burned off." The Kate Collector's account for £25 was passed for payment. On the motion of Cr Munro, seconded by Corr, the meeting was adjourned until Friday, 27th instant, at the usual hour.
