CENSUS NOTES.

A scries of "preliminary tables," compiled from the late census of New Zealand, have been laid before Parliament. They relate to the numbers of the population, and of their dwellings, and to land and live stock. In pre senting them to the Colonial Secretary, the Register-General, Mr VV: <"• E. Brown, remarks that the returns he submits are incomplete, as no returns have yet been received from the Chatham Islands. As a general observation, he states that in the North Island houses of wood or iron and raupo appear to be most numerous ; of cob or sod in the Middle Island ; and huts on the West Coast. The total population of New Zealand, including Chinese and half-castes, but apparently excluding' Maoris, is 299,0*85; It is localised as /blows:—Oingo, 85,113 ; Auckland; 67,451; Canterbury, 08,775; Wellington, 29,?p0 ; Nelson, 22,058 ; Wesdnnd, 14,860; Hawke's Buy, 9228; Marlborough", G145; and Tnra naki, 0400. The males numbered 170,903, and the female?, 123,482. The Chinese numbered 1815, included in which there Was only one female. There were 931 male and 929 female The inhabited houses and huts wove 59,355; there were 3907, uninhabited, and 535 in course of erection. There woe 1007 tents, or building's with canvas roofs. There were found 1893 horses of brick and stone. 50,987, of wood an 1 iron, 3533 of cob, sod, i&c., and 572 of raupo. On the night before the census was taken, 277 Europeans and 10 Chinese were sleeping under drays or camping; out. Of electoral districts, fch,o most populous was Dunedin, with 18,499 persons on shore, and 23 on the water ; the Thames followed with 12,278; Wellington had 10,457, and 181 on board shipping in the harbor; in Christchurch City West. 0194, in Christchurch City East, 7705 ; Auckland City West, 8892, Auckland City East, 4109; Hokitika, 7079; and Napier, 57621 The tolal number of persons on board ships when the census was taken, including immigrants just arrived, was 3367—a number composed 0f.2856 males, and 5iL females. The total extent of the acreage of freehold holdings win 7,029,.'354 J. These lands were held in the following proportions provinciallv : Oiago, 1,080,370]; Wellington, 1,000,5521 ; Hawkh's li;iy, 954,907:];; Canterbury, 877,970.1; Marlborough, Nelson, 030,702]; Tarannki, 79,904; and

Westland, 15,320. For pastoral purposes only 14,102 503 acres wero rented, and acres for other than pastoral purposes. Outgo, Canterbury, and Marlborough, are the great pastoral provinces; but as regards other classes of leases the provinces follow in succession thus : Auckland, 749,399? acres ; 0tag0,051,039J; llawke's Bay, 5§0,005i; Canterbury. 074,809; Wellington, 326,430}; Nelson, 108,295f j Marlborough, 53,00 U; Taranaki, 23,915.}; and Westland, 2478 acres. Tho total area under crop was acres, of which 110,730} were uuder wheat; 108,48G.| in oats; 19,783 i- in barley; in permanent grasses 1,107,115.V ; in hay, 41,211 ; in potatoes, 12,818; in gardonsor orchards, 12,818 ; in turnips o,r rape, £21,440: and in tobacco, 59 acres. In tho Colony there were 12,407,150 head of live ftock, chiefly sheep, which were distributed as follows: Otago, 4,518,439; Canterbury, 3,474,518; Wellington, 1,231338, llawke's Bay, 1,215,259; Nelson, 630,492 ; Auckland, 498.10G ; Taranaki 75,282; and Westland, 11,332. The number of sheep was 11,071,803; cattle'49l,ll3 ; horses, 99,231; brood marcs, 13,090 ; pigs, 123,711 ; goats, 11,223 ; and mules aud asses, 207. There were 1,057,220 head of poultry, 201 steam thrashing machines, 01 driven by water-power, and 503 by horse-power. There wero on hand 1,028,513 bushels of wheat, 878,5D9 bushels of oats, 191,315, bushels of barley, aud 2738 tons of Hour. In these figure;?, however, the live stock and tho property of the Natives in cereals have not been taken into account.
