favorable. The reef is now proved for 300 feet in length and about 100 feet in depth, improving in richness both in sinking and driving, while it carries gold throughout the whole workings. The drive to the south on the reef is 36 feet and varies in thickness from one to two feet, the shaft in the same drive is 34 feet deep, the reef being 20 inches thick, with every appearance of getting thicker. The encroachment of water, however, has prevented further operations at present. The drive to the north on the course of the reef is in 2U7 feet, carrying the reef the whole distance and gold-bearing throughout. The reef varies from one to six feet thick, and shows no signs of any break, being well denned throughout the whole drive. The reef in the face of the drive at present is about one foot thick and looks well. There are about 220 ton 3 of quartz in the paddock and fifty tons more standing in the drive. I should recommend that a new tunnel, sixty feet below the present workings be made into the hill at right augles to the reef. By this means the reef will be struck at 250 feet and enable the mine to be drained and effectively worked for many years to come—besides furnishing a working tunnel on the same level as the machine site. I believe that if the mine is properly opened up in the way I have indicated it will prove one of the most permaI have the honor to remain, Tour obedient servant, William Champion, Mining Manager.
