BULLER ROAD.
[FROM OUR 6VfS CORRESPONDENT.] Travellers on the Buller road will be glad to learn that the new road round the Ohiki hill was open for horse traffic to-day (Thursday). The mad is comparatively level, and seems to have been carried out to the letter according to specifications; and to all appearance is a really first class horse track ; the work reflecting great credit to both contractor and overseer. The road has been constructed under the superintendence of Afr Knyvett, of the Survey department, aud one great essential has been carefully provided in the numerous water-
tables whioll have been constructed along the road. The cuttings in the bluffs are about !J0 feet deep through hard mica slate rock, and the work here is generally creditable.
Owing to the deep cuttings and the loose nature of the top soil, slip 3 may be expected during the winter months, so that if the road is to he kept open for traffic some person ought to be employed to clear away the slips and fallen trees which frequently cucumber the road in uuexpected places. The length of the abovo road is 14G chains, with an average width of six feet.
The contractor is now pushing on the formation of the- dray road, aud the whole of the three sections will be formed by the end of next week. He has commenced laying on the gravel on No 1 aud 2 sections.
Travellers up the Buller Road who travel slowly had better provide themselves with horse feed and creature comforts, as no refreshments can be got before reaching Stewart's Halfway House. When once there they will find good accommodation. The cargo boats belonging to Messrs "White and Croawell arrived at the Inangahua Junction this morning, after an absence of ten days. Owing to the length of time which the boatmen take to bring up cargo from Westport, and the increasing orders from the up country districts, the placing of another boat or two on the river has become an actual necessity.
