BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting was held on Wednesday evening. Present: The Mayor and Crs. Whyte, Sheahan, Suistcd, Muuson, Stitt, Blaclvlock, and Thorpe. CORRESPONDENCE. From John lioid applying for a section in block between Adderley street and the river, instead of section-already allotted. The applicant being a waterman and needing a dwelling-house near the river.— Resolved that the Council adheres to former resolution on the subject. From Win. Hannah, applying for a section as a site for stables in lieu of site on the beach, now in clanger of being washed away. Referred to Sections Committee. From Provincial Secretary, re payment to the Council of the fees and fines of the Resident Magistrate's Court at Westport and half the proceeds arising from License fees collected within the Municipal boundaries under the <: Publican's Licencing Act." The Provincial Secretary replying that the "Fees and fines of the Resident Magistrate's Courts arc colonial revenue and the Provincial Government cannot comply with the request of the Borough Council with regard to the License less. Letter received. Telegram from Provincial Secretary notifying that orders had been given for employment of prisoners in clearing Wakefield street, as requested. NEW VALUATION. The motion by Cr. Organ, of which notice had been given, " That the resolution of Council passed on the 29th April, recommending a valuation be mode of all rateable property within the Borough not included in last valuation be rescinded," was carried unanimously. CORPORATE SEAL. Enquiries were made as to the authority given for obtaining the new seal, there having been no resolution passed to that effect. Eventually it was decided that the seal, then on the table, and bearing the inscirption, " Advance Westport" should be adopted as the seal of the Borough. ROROUOU SOLICITOR'S OPINIOJKT. The mayor reporting that the Borough Solicitor had stated opinion that it would be necessary to make a new valuation, ho proposed that the Report No. 11 of the Finance Committee should be adopted. Seconded by Cr. Why to and carried. GENERAL VALUATION. It was decided " That a valuation bo made of all property within the Borough liable to be rated, to be completed within 30 days from the date of acceptance of tender under penalty of £1 per day. And also that an ad. vertisement be inserted in two issues of the Buller News calling for tenders for the work, from one valuer only. COLLIERY RESERVE. The Committee appointed to draft memorial to the Governor in Council, re protections and rents on colliery reserve, brought up memorial, which after minor alterations was adopted. The meeting then stood adjourned until Wednesday the 27th instant.
