NEW ZEALAND COAL IMPORTS.

[WESITORT STAB.] The return ordered to be laid ou the table of the House of Representatives during the last session of Parliament, showing the quantity and value of coal imported into New Zealand from the Ist July, 1870, to the 16th July, 1873, has been printed and at last circulated. The following particulars are extracted therefrom as showing the ports where the coal was discharged, the localities whence the coal was imported, and the quantities atid value thereof:— Auckland received from the United Kingdom, New South Wales and Victoria, 51,776 tons, of the value of £73,701. The Thames received from New South Wales 1336 tons of the value of £2313. New Plymouth, 278 tons of the value of £532. Wangauui, from the United Kingdom, 00 tons, cf the value of £ISO. ' Wellington, from the United Kingdom and New South Wales, 70,003 tons, valued at £96,074. Napier, from the United Kingdom and New South Wales, 4832 tons, valued at £8517. Nelson, from the United Kingdom, Victoria, and New South Wales, 8255 tons, valued at £13,365. At Okarito 5 tons of Victorian coal, valued at £2O, was discharged in 1872. Lyttelton received from New South Wales and the United Kingdom 72,305 tons, valued at £IO6,SSI. Timaru, from Now South AValcs, 7418 tons, valued at £15,040. Oamaru, from the same colony, 7522 tons, valued at £13,578. Dunedin, from the United Kingdom and New South Wales, 69,257 tons, at £93,496. Invercargill, from New South Wales and the United Kingdom, 153 t tons valued at £3102, and the Bluff, from New South Wales, 685 tons, valued at £765. The aggregate amount being 295,386 tons, valued at £428,464, or a fraction over twentynine shillings per ton. These figures, as a basis of calculation of the probable price to be obtained for West Coast coal delivered at New Zealand ports, are useful.
