BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the weekly meeting held on Wednesday evening last, present his Worship the Mayor and Crs. Stilt, Organ, Blaeklock, Thorpe, Muuson,and Suisted. The following business was transacted : CORRESI'ONDEXCE. Eroin Andrew Corrigan, applying for the office of nightman, and also for permission to occupy a section on the beach as a rubbish and manure depot. From George Srcitbson and John Brent offering to do similar work. From Charles Weitzol asking permission temporarily to occupy reserve between Wakefield and Rintuul streets as a timber yard. From the Inspector of Nuisances, calling attention to the circumstance of somo person having on Sunday morning last emptied the contents of water-closets in the open drains in Lyttelton and Wallahi streets, and recommending that a nightman should bo appointed, and recommending also that the nuisance referred to should be abated. The Inspector also recommended the acceptance of offer made by Smithson and-Bront. From W. D. Banks, Town Clerk of Hokilika, informing the Council that no Crown grants have been yet received for the Hokilika reserves but that a gazette notice had been published, indicating the reserves to be retained for public purposes and such as might be leased for any term not exceoding 21 years. The rent hitherto charged being at the rate of £8 per acre per r.nnucj, the lessees being tenants at will from year to year. Tho letters were received. The Inspector's report as to state of drains was referred fo the Public Works Com-

mittoe. The Town Clerk was instructed to inform A. Corrigan that a rubbish and manure depot had been already set apart, aud tho other matters referred to were held over for consideration.

With reference to Mr Weitzel's application it was proposed by Cr. Munson, and seconded by Cr. Striated, " That the letter be received and that Mr Weitzel bo informed that, the Council have no power to grant his request, and would advise him to apply to the Resident Engineer for temporary use of the ground required. Cr. Organ proposed as an amendment, seconded by Cr. Blacklock, "' That a Committee of the Council wait upon the Resident Engineer, and bring under his notice tbe application of Mr Weitzel and recommend the ■same being granted, if not interfering with railway or harbor works. Such Committee to consist of the Mayor, aud Crs. Organ, Stitt, Blacklock, and Sheahan. Tho amendment was carried.

On tho proposition of Cr. Organ tbe Town Clerk's accounts were passed for payment, and the rest referred to tho Finance Committee for report thereon.

GENERAL BUSINESS. Proposed by the Mayor, secouded by Cr. Suisted, and carried, " That in view of the visit of certain members of the Nelson Executive, Crs. Organ, Whyte, Sheahan, Thorpe, and the mover be a sub-Committee to wait on them in reference to obtaining part of proceeds of recent land sales in Westport, and ether matter connected with the Borough."

Proposed by the Mayor seconded by Cr. Stitt, and carried, " That further consideration of the matter of a pound to bo held ovei\ Proposed by Cr. Sheahan, seconded by Cr. Suisted, aud carried, " That the further consideration of report ou the Municipal reserves be held over until next meeting." An amendment by Cr. Organ, " That consideration of the report be now proceeded with," was not seconded.

The notice of motion standing in the name of Cr Sheahan and referring to Crown grants being obtained of reserves and streets within the Municipal Borough, was allowed to stand over until next meeting. NOTICE OF MOTION Cr. Organ gave notice of his intention to bring forward a motion re appointment of an Inspector of Licenses—Boatmens', Carters', &c.
