BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The weekly meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening—Present, the Mayor (in the chair), and (Vs. Suisted, Sheahan,\Vhyte, Organ, Blacklock, and Thorpe. The minutes of last meeting were read, and after slight alterations were confirmed. CORRESPOND ENC E. The following correspondence was read :—From— The Provincial Secretary stating that the Provincial District Engineer is empowered to employ the prison labor on works required for the Council. The Mayor moved, " That the Town Clerk be instructed to acknowledge the receipt of letter from the Provincial Secretary in re prison labor," which was agreed to.
Telegram from the Superintendent stating that he cannot allow the Bylaw made by the Council in respect to clearing sections. Or. Organ moved, seconded by PV Suisted, " That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to the Provincial Government requesting to know on what grounds they disallow the By-law in respect to clearing sections."— Tarried. mends tliat two blocks of seven sitirl fifteen acres, be surveyed and laid off in sections
Block 1. from Darby street to the Hospital grounds to be laid off in sections of one rood each. Block 2 North side of Sim Mile ro'id, adjoining sections of Messrs N\ Edwards & Co., to be laid off in halfacre allotments.
The said two blocks to be opeu for occupation by applicants as soon as surveyed. Lease i of the above to bo granted for ten years dating from the first day of the month following the granting of the application, at a rental to be fixed by the Council, or to the highest tenderer. A deposit of £5 to accompany each tender, and in event of the tender not being accepted the deposit to be returned. Cr. Why to moved, seconded by Cr, Blacklock, " That the report as read be received and adopted." Cr Organ moved sis an amendment) seconded by Cr. Thorpe, " That the report be received and held over for the consideration of the Council."
The Alayor, having put the amend* ment and motion, declared the amendment csirried.
The report of the Keserves Committee in respect to Mrs Mills' application recommends that the sections she requires should not be granted, the applicant not having furnished the Committee with the deeds or papers of the property destroyed, in lieu of which such sections were requested to be given in compensation. Cr. Sheahan moved, seconded by Cr. Whyte, " That the report as read be received and adopted."
Cr. Suisted moved as an amendment, " That the report be referred back to the Committee;" but there being no seconder the original motion was carried.
THE POUND. An elaborate report, containing upwards of half-a-do«en folio sheets of foolscap, was brought up and read, in respect to the Corporation Pound. The report contains a great manyclauses, also a schedule of fees to be charged. Cr. Suisted moved, seconded by Cr. Sheaban, " That the report be adopted." The Mayor suggested that the block corner of Palmerston and Bentham streets be used as a pound for twelve months, as it was mucb more conveniently situated for the. purposes required than the site proposed. Cr. Whyte moved as an amendment, seconded by Cr. Organ, " That tbe consideration of the pound site stand over till next meeting."
The Mayor having put both propositions to the meeting, the amendment of Cr. Whyte was carried. Cr. Sheahan gave notice that he should move at next meeting, " That his "Worship the Mayor be requested to obtain crown grauts for all tbe Municipal reserves and streets within the Borough." The Council then adjourned until Wednesday evening next, at the usual hour.
