BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At the weekly mee: ing held on Wednesday evening—present: the Mayor, and Crs. Sheahan, Blacklock, Whyte, Stitt, Organ, Thorpe, and Suisted—business was transacted as follows : - CORRESPONDENCE. Telegram from the Hon. Minister of Public Works, regretting his inability to visit Westport at present, but that he would avail himself of the first opportunity to do so. Letter from Mr James Olive requesting permission to lay temporary tramway across Palmerston street, and to take gravel from the gravel pit for improvement of business frontages. Permission was granted. APPEALS. The report of the Sub-Committee appointed to take into consideration the objections of appellants was received and adopted. It was resolved that the assessment on gaol premises occupied by W. A. Kiely should be struck off the rate book. pound. The Sub-Committee had not met to discuss the subject of a site. RY-IA.W. The Mayor proposed that the Bylaw referring to clearing of sections should be passed.—Carried. GENERAL BUSINESS. Or. Thorpe's notice of motion, "That steps be taken to secure a block of land within one mile from the centre of the town for purposes of public recreation," was proposed by the mover, seconded by Cr. Sheahan, and carried. Proposed by Cr. Thorpe, seconded by Cr. Organ, and curried, "That a Committee, consisting ot Crs. Stitt, Suisted, and the mover, be appointed to give effcct.to the preceding motion. Cr. Oryan in terms of notice of motion proposed, and Cr. Suisted seconded, resolution, " That the Waste Lands Board withdraw from sale that block of land bouuded by Pell, Derby, Lyndhurst, and Brougham Streets, in lieu of Britannia Square, and take steps to procure any part of same that may be alienated by exchange or purchase. Motion lost, mover and seconder only voting for it. Cr. Organ's other notices of motion were withdrawn. The M"ayor proposed, " That the subject of printing and advertising be considered bv the Council. Motion seconded by Cr. Whyte and carried. Proposed by Cr. Sheahan, and seconded by Cr. Blacklock, " That during the current municipal year, ending in the month of December next, all printing and advertising be executed at the Westport Times Office, and that the Clerk be instructed to obtain and file copies of the Westport Times newspaper." Amendment by Cr. Organ, "'That in future the Council only advertise in one of the local papers, and that tenders be invited from the two local papers for any advertising and printing the Council may require." Seconded by Cr. Suisted. The votes for the motion were Cr. Sheahan, Blacklock, and Thorpe. For the amendment the Mayor, and Crs. Suisted, Whyte, Organ, and Stitt. The amendment was thus carried. The report of the Appeal Committee which was adopted by the Council, recommended— That the valuation of James Weston's property should be upheld. That the valuation of W. Hannas' stable should be reduced to £2O. That the valuation Mr J. T. Hughes' sections, Nos G, 7, GS, and 103, Pal-merston-street, should be upheld, and that sections No 8. 14, and 77 be rated at £2O per annum ; and No 104 at £3O, No 11 at £ls. That the valuation on sections Nos 48, 49, and 50 be upheld, and that sections 55, 68, 593, 89, and 140 bo valued at rate estimated by the owner.
