ST. JOHN'S CHURCH.
At the distribution of prizes, on Wednesday evening last, to the pupils o.f the St John's Sunday School a very numerous assemblage met at the Manse. The youngsters were there in full force, as also their teachers and friends and visitors. The heavy showers falling debarred many from the pleasure of attendance, but still all who could in safety or comfort reach the trysting place there, and it is needless to say, were gratified. The prizes were given in the following order :
First Class—Boys: Ist prize, T. R. Fleming; 2nd prize, T. F. Franks ; 3rd prize, Ward Rathbun ; 4th prize, G-eorge Falla; sth prize, George Munro.
Second Class—Boys : Ist prize, W. Morris; 2 prize, Franks; equal marks, J. Munro, J. Ambrose, and J. M'Farlane.
First Class G-irls : Ist prize, Catherine Blyth ; 2nd prize, Catherine Morris; 3rd prize, Martha Jane M'Farlane ; 4th prize, Mary Falla. Second Class—G-irls: Ist prize, Maggie Blyth; 2nd prize, Isabella M'Leod ; 3rd prize, Ellen Falla; 4th prize, Agnes M'Leod and Elizabeth M'Farlane, equal. Third Class Girls : Ist prize, Bessie Whyte; 2nd prize, Ellen Whyte.
Fourth Class—Girls and Boys: Ist prize, Ada Vorley ; 2nd prize, Willie Carpenter ; 3rd prize, Lillie Falla; 4th prize, AV. Ambrose. Fifth Class—Prize, Annie Gothard. Special prizes for proficiency in Creed, Lord's Prayer, and Commandments : —Boys: Wm. Morris, Edward Labatt, Joseph Munro, and John F. Ambrose. Girls : Catherine Morris, Catherine Blyth, Henrietta Jacobsen, Minnie Macdonald, Jane Robinson.
After the prizes had been presented another treat was given the delighted juveniles. From a Christmas tree laden with toys, each child received a gift, and a liberal distribution of books and pictures was also made among the younger children. The arrangements for the convenince of visitors was well cared for, and the little ones coming from far and near were well tended. Mr and Mrs Soutar kindly placed their house at the disposal of the School Committee, and were most assiduous in their efforts to promote the success of this little an nual event, which has become a red letter day in the annals of young Westportians.
