BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual weekly meeting wae held on Wednesday, the 11th instant. Present : the Mayor and Crs. Whyte, Blacklock, Munson, Sheahan, and Thorpe. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr Kiely (Acting Gaoler) requesting that his name be struck off the list of ratepayers, as occupant only of official quarters". Held over for consideration. From Warden Giles Duller punt,' stating that the holder of protection had promised to.get the punt complete and in working order by Monday the loth instant. Received, and thanks recorded. From the Registrar-General requesting official returns.—Ordered to be at once made up and .forwarded. MEMORIAL. The carters of Westport " Licensed by the Hon. Commissioners of Customs for the conveyance of- goods under bond," memorialised tho Council to the effect that having first seen in the columns of the Westport Times a report of the decision of the Council as to a tariff of fares for cartage, which they, the carters, considered unfair to themselves, they now requested' that the Council would consider a new tariff to the following effect ■ — That a load shall mean 20 cwt or 40 cubic feet. That an extra charge equal to one half fare be allowed between G p.m. and 8 a.m.. and also for carriage of coal. That 4s per load be charged from Rintoul to Kennedy Street and north as far as the Church. From Rintoul to Henley street 3s. From old township to Henley street, between Palmerston street and Buller river, 3s. From Rintoul street and along the beach as per agreement. The memorial was received. RATE COLLECTOR. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, the Town Clerk was given the additional appointment of Rate Collector. BY-LAW 9. Boats and boatmen.—lt was decided that every person plying for hire on the river should, after satisfying the proper officer of the Council as to his competency to manage a boat, and also as to the carrying capacity of the craft intended to be used, and also obtaining a certificate of good character from not less than 3 ratepayers, pay a license fee of 10s per annum. This by-law referring also to the owners of passenger, cargo, ballast, or water boats. Passenger's fares.—Tho following tariff was decided on :—- Westport and Packer's Point, la. South Spit, Is. Waite's Landing, 2s. To vessel or boat not more than half way across the river, 6d. For children between the age of 2 and 12 years one half rate. Children under 2 years of age free.
Double fares between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., and whenever the danger signal is ] olsted. Luggage allowed each statute adult 221bs. GENERAL BUSINESS. -- Cr. Skeahan's notice of motion (in reference to By-law controlling places of amusement), " That after the word Council the following words be included, viz : " Provided however that nothing herein contained shall apply to or affect licensed hotels, nor iuterfere with the operations of the Licensing Act," was discussed and adjourned for further consideration. NOTICES OE MOTION. Cr. Thorpe gave notice that at the next meeting he would propose, That an inspector of nuisances being urgently needed, and the Council not being at present in a position to employ a special officer, Sub-Inspector Kiely should be communicated with relative to such inspection being undertaken by a member of the local police force, in addition to his ordinary duties. Such officer receiving certain remuneration from the Council for the extra duty. The meeting then adjourned.
