REFRESHING MOCHA.
The following is from Medical Notes and Queries: —" A well-made decoction of coffee is a natural tonic of the first order, an antiseptic, and a preservative against • wear and tear ' by daily labor. By its action on the kidneys it promotes the elimination of noxious matter from the system, and so there may be some truth in the belief that it is good against gout and rheumatism. It is recommended by French physicians for hoop-ing-couejh ; and not without good reason advisable for nervous temperaments, the sedentary, and the studious. M. Payen is of opinion that a cup of cafe au lait represents about six time more of nitrogenous matter than broth. Dr Chabrand has remarked that during the last quarter of a centuary Cretinism has lost ground in the arrondissement of Briangon, and among the causes of this amelioration he places the use of coffee, which has spread to the most distant hamlets and the most indigent poor. The women, especially, he adds, have recourse to coffee in all their delicate ailments. They find it a sort of panacea. Hot or cold coffee is a most refreshing drink in summer, when diluted to a great extent after having been made very strong."
