BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the usual weekly meeting on Wednesday evening last—Present: the Mayor, and Crs. Whyte, Organ, Sheahan, Munson, Blacklock, and Thorpe. The following business was transacted. CORRESPONDENCE. letters from Thomas Jephcoate and John Eafferty, applying for land near the Hospital. Reply authorised that Council not yet in position to entertain the application. The Public Works Committee presented report embodying recommendations to the following effect, re W. S. Munday's application for use of section That it is undesirable at present to make further allotments on the block referred to. —Adopted. He application of Joseph Cooper and others. That in event of sudden calamity by flood or river encroachment their claim for allotment of sections should receive attention. —Adopted. That a section be allotted to James Whelan for site formerly held in Ereeman street. —Adopted. That Messrs Olive and Shearer be requested to surrender their protection, and remove their tramway from Palmerston street.—Adopted. That Palmerston street gravel pits be thrown open to the public.—Adopted. That the Provincial Government be informed that Walter Abernethy had not constructed rrant at the Bentham street ferry in accordance with terms of protection granted him, and to request enforcement of conditions.—Adopted. BY-LAWS. Regulations under Part VIII, Clause XIII, were adopted, enforcing—That all offal and dead carcases should be buried on the island at the mouth of the Buller river. That no licenses for private slaughter-houses be granted within the Borough.---That owners of wheeled vehicles plying for hire shall pay license fee of £1 per annum.— That a load carried by licensed vehicle shall mean 20 cwt.—That charges for carriage shall be at rates as»fixed by the Council.—That pedlars and hawkers, having no place of residence in the Borough, shall pay a license fee of £lO per annum—excepting sellers of vegetables, produce, fish or poultry. Rates. Proposed by Cr. Whyte, seconded by Cr. 3iunson, and carrird, That a rate of

£5 per ceut. per annum bo struck on the valuation allowed for the term of six months next ensuing. Proposed by the Mayor, second d by Cr. Sheahan, and carried—That the appointment of collector of rates and receiver be referred to the Finance Committee. It was decided to hold the next meeting of the Council on Thursday tbe 11th instant.
