[Anglo-Australian Press Telegraph Agency] CHARLESTON. November 24 The most effective meeting ever held in Charleston was at Theatre Royal on Saturday, by Donne, candidate for Council. Four hundred present. Vote of confidence carried. Meeting winding up with four hearty cheers for " Honest George." Another meeting by Dvvan on the same evening passed motion of " fitness for office " amidst great cheering. GREYMOUTH. November 22. Curtis held a meeting at Brunnerton. Forty present. Vote of confidence passed, two hands only against the motion. Nov. 24, 12 noon. Mr Curtis held a meeting at No Town on Friday evening. About two hundred present. A vote that he is a fit and proper person was carried. An amendment to the contrary was lost. Only twelve hands, held up for the amendment. At the Theatre, on Saturday, a vote of confidence was almost unanimously passed.

WELLINGTON. Nov. 20th, 9.30 p.m. The Lyttelton Times this morning has published the following official information : The Inter-colonial steamer which arrived at Hokitika yesterday brought telegraph despatch from AgentGeneral to Colonial Government, stating that the following vessels have sailed from Great Britain during the month of October, with the number of immigrants mentioned: —Salisbury, for Wellington, 250; Queen of North, for Napier, 216; Lauderdale, for Auckland, 122 i Dunfillan, for Otago, 160; Isle

of South, for Canterbury, 320; total, 1868. Dr Featherstone also states that a ship was to sail on November 19th for Napier, but does not state number of immigrants. He also states that in obedience to latest instructions a telegram from the Government at close of Session he had to abandon the promissory notes system with immigrants, and had announced his intention of granting free passages, and insisting only on cost of outfit and expenses of conveyance to port of embarkation. He bad also placed himself in direct and cordial communication with the leaders of agricultural Laborer's Uuious and other societies of similar character as directed. Before receiving instructions from Government re chartering steamers for conveyance of immigrants, he had made arrangements to send a number by the Mongol the first steamer for the new San Francisco Line. He concluded by stating he had shipped four locomotives and 1700 tons of railway plant for the colony, and hoped to be able to dispatch 3600 tons in all November.

Nov. 20th, 10 p.m. The Provincial elections have resulted in a great triumph for candidates in favor of secular education. AUCKLAND. Nov. 20th, 8 p.m. Official declaration of poll:— ■Williamson, 2929; Dargaville, 2441; Lusk, 1817. After deductions by Scrutineer, Williamson's majority is declared at 400.
