SALARIES IN MELBOURNE.
(From the Daily Telegraph.)
An appendix to the Civil Service report purports to give a statement of the salaries paid in Melbourne by the public companies and private firms, for the purpose of comparison with the public service. The banks take the lead, paying their general managers from £I7OO to £3500 per annum; assistant managers obtain from £BOO to £2OOO per annum, and accountants from £4OO to £7OO, while ledgerkeepers commence at £l5O and go up to £4OO, and clerks commence at £SO and go on up to £3OO. Insurance companies pay their managing directors £750, with 5 per cent, profit ; secretaries range from £6OO to £IOOO per annum, and office-clerks obtain from £l7O to £400; junior clerks commence at £3O per annum. Manchester warehousemen pay their cashiers (who have power to sign cheques) from £750 to £lpoo per annum, and ordinary cashiers from £3OO to £500; head clerks receive £520 to £7OO, and ordinary clerks from £SO to £350. The hire appears to be worthy of the laborer in Melbourne, but enthusiasts should remember that it takes a long time to reach the pinnacles of commercial success, and that the lower rungs of the ladder are fairly swarmed by a throng of applicants. Their name already is legion, and the cry is still they come.
