A DOUBLE-SOLED DIGGER.
Another case df robbing a gold mine has been reported td the Victorian police, though this time the amount stolen was so paltry, that, had it not been for the methodical way in which it was done, a person could scarcely have thought it possible that any one would have risked his character on such a miserable piece ot plunder. The quantity of goM was only a fraction over a pennyweight. It seems that the mining manager of the Golden Reef Cempauy suspected from what he saw that one of the miners, named Gay, or Gray, was placing some gold or washdirt in his boot, and advised the searcher of his suspicion. On the man reaching the surface he was searched and asked if he had any gold about him, which he denied. He was told to take off his boots, which he did, and they were turned upside down and tapped sharply on the soles, but nothing fell out. Having been put on the alert by the manager, the searcher then introduced his hand, without sucsuccess at first, but on feeling about he discovered what turned out to be a false sole within the boot, fastened to the centre portion of lower sole ; and on raising the heel part of this a piece of brown paper was found, containing about 5s worth of gold. The directors instructed the company's solicitor to take the necessary action in the matter.
