REWARDS FOR DISCOVERY OF NEW GOLDFIELDS.
Acting on a resolution of the Assembly last session, the Executive have agreed to the following conditions under which rewards will be given for the discovery of new goldfields, from the date hereof till the 31st of December, 1874 : Ist. That the person be deemed & discoverer who shall first find gold; arid notify the same in writing, either to a Superintendent of a province, or td the Chairman of the County of "Westland, or to the nearest "Warden or Resident Magistrate. In such notification the discoverer shall state as nearly as practicable, the exact locality and distance from the nearest gold workings or nearest town. 2nd. If two or more persons simultaneously discover gold in the same locality, or in places immediately adjacent, and each severally comply with the conditions above mentioned, the sum proper to be awarded will be divided amongst the several persons who have discovered the goldfield, in such manner as shall bo determined, after due investigation by the Secretary for Crown Lands, or his appointee. 3rd. Rewards will only be given for discoveries made public, subsequently to the publication of this notice. Condition applicable to the North Island:— (a) A newly discovered goldfield must bo distant at least thirty miles from the nearest gold workings. (b) A reward of £SOOO will be given for the first newly discovered goldfield that yields 25,0000z5, between the date hereof and the 31st 1874. Should the yield not amount to 25,0000z5, the reward will be reduced according to the following graduated scale :—£4ooo if the field yield 20,000 ozs before the 31st of December, 1874 ; £3OOO if the field yield 15,000 ozs before the 31st of December, 1874; £2OOO if the field yield 10,000 ozs before the 31st of December, 1874 j £IOOO if the field yield 5000 ozs before the 31st of December, 1874. (c) No prospecting to be allowed oil native lands without the consent of the nativo owners previously obtained, and the approval of tho Native* Minister.
. (d) Prospectors going on native lands withe'tib the consent of the owners are liable to the penalties imposed by the Acts relating to the goldfields, and will forfeit all claim to reward. (e) Native owners will bo entitled to tho rewards, provided that, if the discovery be made on their own land, they enter into arrangement with the 'Government for throwing such land open for mining purposes to the public. Conditions applicable to the Middle Island:— (a) A newly discovered goldfield must bo distant at least ten miles •from the nearest gold workings. •(b) No reward shall exceed £2OOO. (c) Howards not exceeding in the whole £SOOO will be given in accordance with the following scale :—£2ooo if the field yields 20,0000zs before the 31st of December, 1574 ; £IOOO if the field yields 10,000ozs before tho 31st December, 1574. 4<th The words " nearest gold-work-ings " shall mean gold-workings on which miners are actually employed searching for gold.
