BULLER COAL AND RAILWAY COMMITTEE.
A special meeting of the Committee was held on Friday last at the Empire Hotel to consider the action of the Nelson Waste Lands Board in granting to a Mr Walker, of Auckland, a coal prospecting license for twelve months, over an area of 6720 acres, including Coal Brook Dale and th'e Waimangaroa. Telegrams from the district members of Provincial Council were read, and it was resolved that a telegram should be forwarded to Messrs Reid and O'Couorstating that the Westport publie felt surprised and indtgnant at the action of the Superintendent in sanctioning the grant of the prospecting license, in opposition to the expressed wish that no further rights should be granted over the coalfield pending arrangements with General Government to make railway from Westport to the Ngakawhau; arid requesting the members to enquiry fully on the subject in the Couucil. It was resolved also that a memorial to the Provincial Council should be drawn up and forwarded to Nelson, embodying a recital of the recent action of the Committee, and praying that the wishes of the inhabitants of Westport should receive due consideration.
