WELLINGTON. March 27. Ths Government armourer reports favorably of the Malvern coal for smelting purposes. The Government intend to prosecute the captain of the Glenlora for alleged breach of immigration regulation during the voyage. It is understood that Mr Whitaker refuses to accept the leadership of the Ministry in the Upper House. GRETMOITTH. March 27. An adjourned meeting of the Company has been held. Prospectus as amended shows capital of £40,000 in £5 shares. The objects of the association are to lease and work the Grey mines ; to lease railway from mines, and to purchase or charter vessels to carry coal. A large number of shares have been taken. LATE TELEGRAMS. WELLINGTON. A telegram from Dr Featherston states that arrangements have been made for the conveyance of 1200 tons of railway iron to Lyttelton. The Government have purchased the Port Chalmers and Dunedm Railway, on the following terms : —They require the £120,000 of stock of the company, at £G 5s per share, and take up the liability of the Company's £IOO,OOO of debentures. The total purchasemoney is £175,000. The Company asked £220,000. AUCKLAND. March 25, A meeting of the South British Coinpauy's shareholders, yesterday, unanimously adopted the proposal of the Directors, to issue 12,500 new shares, at 20s premium, the amount of the premiums being devoted to the formation of a reserve fund, DUNEDIN. March 25. Good attendance at the races. For tho Maiden Plate Butterfly, 1; Queen Bee, 2 ; May Morn, 3. Hurdle Race—Tatton, 1; Medora, 2. Jockey Club Handicap—Tambourini and Misfortune ran neck and neck, ended in a dead heat. They divided the stakes. Butterfly, 3 ; Gazelle, 4. Town Plate—Hatred, 1; Awatea, 2. Novel Handicap Brunette, 1; Merryman, 2. Consolation Stakes - Levndon, 1; Little Nell, 2 ; Minx broke her back. A Parliamentary survey line, from Dunedin to Moeraki, was commenced ten days ago. Brogden's tender for completing the central line to the Chain Hills, four and a half miles, is £4699. (?) . The purchase of the Port Railway is favorably regarded. John Duff, an old settler of the Molyneux, has committed suicide. The passengers by the Phillip Laing, the first ship to the settlement, intend celebratingthe twenty-fifth anniversary on the 15th proximo.
