The Government after examining the Public Works Act, found they could not subsidise colliers. . The prospectus'df the new company proposes one-half the Capital to be raised in Wellington. The company will lease and work mines and construct tramways. They will order from England a 250 to 300 ton steamer, drawing eight feet of water when loaded. In the meantime charter steamers or sailing vessels. The calculated cost of coal here is 22s per ton. POET CHALMERS. Another passenger on board the Charlotte Gladstone, has died from Typhoid fever. DUNEDIN. The coal miners at Kaitangata have struck for higher wages. An early settlers association has been formed. . ' AUCKLAND. Feb. 24. Reported gold discovery at Hikutaia.
