LYELL.

(FBOM OUB OWN COBEESPONDENS?.) On Saturday last I made a short visit to the Lyell and was rather suiv prised at the busy aspect which pervaded the place. There were all sorts of meetings, 'from making calls on •claims payable, to raffles, &c. The streets (if they may be so called) seemed alive with people, and all the stores and .public bars appeared to be well patronised. The reefing interest was evidently predominant. Little, here was talked of but formation of companies, calls due, and ! how to find the needful. Referring to claims and companies I must not forget to mention that the Excelsior ■commenced crushing on Monday last, and purpose putting through about 150 tons before washing up. Leaving the Excelsior and William Tell, I paid •a short visit to the Little Wonder •claim and that of Blair and O'Brien, who are pushing on with their work and expect to strike the reef in a few days. The Lyell Creek and Oriental have both applied for registration under 'the Limited Companies Act, •as have also the Break of Day and Golden Crown, thus making the total seven, with every probability of many more being added to their number. The Monte Christo, being the next claim on the line, deserves special notice as the reef is easily traced along the surface more than 150 feet, and along the whole extent exhibits every .prospect of a more than payable reef. I notioe this claim more particularly as being more easily got at. I tried the loose quarts from several faces and never failed getting fair prospects of loose gold, besides this, gold is eaoily discerned in the quartz. Maloney's line of reef is still being pegged northwards, and the prospects •are very -satisfactory, in fact every claim pegged north -seems better than the last one. Beforo I left a rush had been reported one mile from this locality, the Eight-mile. Of course there are many ■and great obstacles to contend with, but capital and energy will open up a Goldfield here unrivalled in New Zealand. I had almost forgotten a very important matter arranged on Saturday evening, between Messrs Carrol and Cairns, and the Lyell Creek Goldmining Company, which is, that in consideration of certain water rights held by the Company, Carrol and Cairns assist the company to bring ■in their race, and place their machinery right on the hill in the centre of the claims, thus giving every facility for prospecting and developing this portion of the field. In concluding tbese hasty remarks I must mention that Mr David Leslie seems to be well employed with the registration and transfer of claims and companies.
