HARD S WEARING.

( To the Editor of the Westport Times.) Sib, —When such opposite swearing occurs as did in the Westport R. M. Court on Tuesday last, in the case for assault, J. A. Maguire v. Rebeca Smith, and vice versa, were enquiries to be made by the police with the view to proving a case of perjury against the guilty one, it would put terror in the hearts of unscrupulous persons, who only think it a good joke or clever revenge to frustrate justice through a mock kiss on the sacred volume, before his worship. Should such enquiries be made in the present case I would assist the police by naming a third witness—a female and a stranger—who distinctly saw the assault, as she now admits, though denying it at the time, when challenged by me. Her explanation now being her modest objection to appear in court. I write this, and request its insertion, simply with the hope that some check may be put to reckless perjury, endangering the liberty and lives of persons whose character and reputation is above the criticism of all—but the perjurer. James AuTinjits Magttire. Maguire's Hotel, Westport, February 6th, 1873.
