LYELL.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT) Jan. 20. It is a pleasurable duty to record the good news that splendid gold has been struck in No. 1 south, Moloney's, also iii Nos. 1 and 2 north of same, which proves the Lyell to be one of the best reefing districts in New Zealand, :md miners here feel quice confident of opening out something that will surpass the famous Caledonian. Our only cry at present is for machinery. When that is procured, and in working order, there can be but slight hesitation in saying that we shall be able to send down fortnightly if not weekly, parcels of gold similar to that now going from the Little "Wonder. Never in New Zealand has a better opportunity occurred than the present to any enterprising company that will place a public battery in some con- \ venient place on the reefs. They could rely upon having as much stone as would keep forty head of stampers continually going, and I fully ex- oir before long to see the matter taken in hand. It would be a very easy matter to place machinery on Long's claim, which would be a convenient place for the Golden Crown" and other adjoining claims. The tender for driving the 'William Tell tunnel has been accepted, and the work is now being carried on. In the Resident Magistrate's Court before C. Broad, Esq., R.M., on January 17th, the following cases were disposed of:— Thomas "Walsh, for being drunk and disorderly was fined 20s, or 48 hours. John Black, for horse stealing, charged on the information of Demetrio Messiti. Case withdrawn by prosecutor. In the Warden's Court, the following cases were disposed of:— O'Brien and Blair v. Cairns and Carrol.—This was an action against the clefendents for illegally taking possession of plaintiffs' claim, being two men's ground on southern boundary of Little Wonder. Verdict for plaintiffs with costs. Matthew Long's application for goldmining lease was recommended, also several applications for waterrace dams, &c, were disposed of.
