WELLINGTON". An Early Colonists Association has been formed, composed of persons who arrived between the 17th August 1839, and 3rd February, 1853. Its objects are tho collecting, recording, and publishing of interesting historic incidents and data relating to the early settlement of the Colony, to promote kindly feelings amongst tho pioneers by occasional meetings, and to assist old colonists in distress. Sir George Grey has been invited to become President. A number of old colonists now residing in various parts of the world are to be vice-presidents. Mr AVaterhouse will take the portfolio of Colonial Secretary on MiHall resignation. William Thomas has received,, in the gaol, the twenty-five lashes to which he was sentenced for indecent assault on a little girl. The prisoner is an old Tasmanian convict, and his back bears the marks of previous punishment. The ' Independent of the 9fch, says tho Cabinet Council was held yesterday to consider the whole question in dispute between tho General Government and the Superintendent of Nelson regarding tho Brunner Coalmine Railway. The Cabinet agreed to accept most of the modifications contended for by the Superintendent, on his agreeing to secure the cost of the railway on the mine, particularly as to minimum production of coal. The ' Independent' also says that the whole responsibility of proceeding with the work rests upon Mr Curtis. The whole rails and rolling stock for the line are on their way out; the line, barring hitches, may be opened in twelvo month.". Tb6 Eebingtou sailed for London, on the 10th, with a cargo valued at £IB,OOO Wheat, none ; malting barley, none ; best oats, 3/. Id. to 3s. 2d.; inferior, 2s. Bd. to 2s. 9d. Flour £U to £ls per ton. AUCKLAND. Henry Cuthbortson, clerk of" the Post-Office, convicted of stealing a test letter, has been sentoucod to three year's hard labor. The sharebrokera intend to petition the Government to suspend the Saarebrokers Act. NELSON. D. Femvick, Lowther Broad, Esq.?., and Dr. Squires have been appointed a Central Board of Health for Nelson. Mr Robert Pollock has been appointed Superintendent-Collector of the Census for the Province of Nelson. CHRISTCHHRCH. At Mr Nosworthy's sale of racing stock little was done owing to the high reserves. 420 guineas each was offered for Calumny and Lurline, but they were withdrawn for 500 guineas each. Wheat, nominal; oats, 2s 9d ; flour, £l4 to £ls per ton. Dr. Featherstono and Sir Charles Clifford have been appointed Commissioners to represent the colony at the opening of the Vienna Exhibition. The Auckland and Christchurch exhibits will bo sent via Suez, as the only means of reaching "Vienna in time. DUNEDIN. Th 9 Northern escort brings 16,589 ounces, the largest for years. The ' Times' states, on authority, that the hon. J. Hall resigns his seat in the Cabinet before next session, and proceeds to England en private affairs; and that Mr Waterhouse will try and get a seat in the Lower House. The yield of gold for the shows anincrease of 3000ozs ever 1871. Teas ex Elderslie ;have been auctioned. Medium, half-chests, at Is 3-Jd; medium, boxes, at Is 5M to Is 6*d; Sugars, ex Queen of the South, have been auctioned, and show an advance of 30s to 50s on last sales, for browns and yellow crystals. a
