VICTORIA. Governor Canterbury goes homo by the February mail. Mr Fellows will accept the Judgeship, and enters on his duties next year. The Parliament session is likely to close early next mouth.
A break occurrred in the overland line near Charlotte Waters during a thunderstorm, but is now restored.
Messrs Mount and Morris, who were present on board tho Carl during the South Sea, massacre, have been arrested in this Colony, and will be proceeded against. The Telegraph banquets, held at Sydney and Adelaide on the 15th, were a success.
At Adelaide the Governor said he was commanded by the Queen to state that the Chief Secretary would be made a Knight Commander of St. Michael and St. George; Mr Todd and tho Agent-General Companions of the Order. Mr Todd received an ovation, and gave a history of the line. Communications were exchanged in two hours. Messages were received from .America and all parts.
The steamer Providenco was blown to atoms on the Darling River, and five men were killed. New Zealand wheat, Gs sd; oats, 3s. 3d. and ia fair demand; breadstuffs, slightly easier, and business moderate. New Zealand Bank shares are offered at £2O 10s. SYDNEY. The Assembly has rejected the narrow guage. The Customs revenue for nine months shows an increase of ninetyone thousand. A shock of earthquake was felt at Jeverest, Eudin, and Queaubeyn on the 26th. Captain Alexander and five of the crew of the Carl were convicted of the murder of Polynesians, and sentenced to death. The estimated expenditure for the year shows an increase of one hundred and seventy-six thousand. ADELAIDE. Wheat, dull at 6s; crops looking well.
