THE ANATORI REEFS.
The development of these reefs is progressing favorably, and there are some specimens taken from tho prospectors claim on view at Mr Webster's, Trafalgar street, which can vie with any quartz hitherto brought into Nelson. The population of the entire district is about 1-10 men, who draw their supplies principally from two
stores at the month of the Anatoni river. The laud ou which the reefs are situated is a native reserve, but miner's rights are issued by the Warden of OollingwooH. It is pity that the Government do not take some steps for the better management of the district, as at present there is no post-office, nor are there any tracks, ferries or other conveniences which this fast developing district so much requires. The population is increase ing daily, and when the place haa been prospected a little more, will increase much more rapidly. The alluvial diggings are at present confined to small gullies, where the ma* jority of the men alt work are making wages, and in some cases rather more. There has been no new ground opened lately, owing to the weather which has been so bad, that it has been impossible for any one to (to out prospecting Tho reef has been taken Up north and south of the prospectors claim, and ia No. 1 North a drive of 50ft has been made, and gold is plainly visible throughout the stone. The tunnel made by the prospectors is about 35ft long, and they have taken out 70 tons stone, from which very good prospects can be obtained, some running as high as 2dwts to the dish. The prospec tors wish to sell a part of their interest to enable them to erect the necessary machinery, &c. The "claims No. 1, 2, and 3, south, have commenced operations, and are working night and day on the western slope of the spur in which tho reef is situated, and which they expect to reach when they have driven about 53fb. One Very good feature among the men on the ground is, that none of them show a disposition to shepherd their claims, but all seem to work as if they were confident of a successful result.-—' Colonist.''
