THE O'CONOR SCANDAL.
The fears entertained that the enquiry in the House of Representatives on this subject, will result in nothing more than the perpetration of a ridiculous sham, the burking of all honest investigation, aud the patching up of an utterly rotten case for the gratification of one individual alone; have ample confirmation in the accompanying correspondence, which we place on record, as we intend to do with all other genuine documentary evidence we can obtain therein. Extract from the proceedings of the Select Committee on the Bailer Petition Enquiry. Tuesday, July 23rd, 1872. Resolved, That the Chairman be requested to notify to all members of the Provincial Councilof Nelson that this Committee has been appointed to inquire into certain allegations against Eugene J. O'Conor connected with the Westport Land Purchase, and that it is willing to hear them or any of them personally, or by counsel, in reference to such allegations. A true extract. H. E. I have the honor to acknowledge, with thanks, receipt of what purports to be a circular signed by yourself as chairman of the Bailer Petition Enquiry Committee, containing copy of the said committee's resolution, &c. Having important evidence to offer, I desire to be informed whether the document in question is to be regarded by me as a summons or an official intimation that my presence is required at Wellington. Charleston, August 3, 1872. Gillies, Esq':; M. H.R.; Wellington. I atn greatly grieved by the substance of your telegraphic reply. In ropeating that I have important evidence to offer, I have the honor to add that I sincerely trust the House haying consented to an inquiry, that in the interest of all that is good, neither expense or pains may be spared by the Committee now to render it both complete and exhaustive.
