To-morrow, the tenth instant, is the last •day on -which applications will be reoeived by Mr Commissioner Sharp, from persons entitled to share in the allocation of sections on the Colliery Reserve. We understand the classification of claims for business Bites, will be proceeded with on Thursday, and, probably,-on the'following day the drawing by lots will take place and the selections will be registered. Four corner sections nearest the river at the end of Wakefield and Rintoul streets will be fiobably reserved as sites for bonded stores, t will be necessary, judging from present appearances, to lay off other sections for selection, as the number already reserved will not prove sufficient. to meet all the claims to be preferred. The more especially, if the just claims of freeholders, and holders of business sites, who are now debarred from any share in the allocation; are to receive consideration. As regards the construction of wharves, it is evidently not the present intention of the Nelson Government to incur any responsibility therein, as applications are being considered from residents claiming protection for sites for private wharfage, and we understand preference will be given to the claims of persons who have heretofore held similar privileges, but have been losers by the sea or river encroachment. Additional works will be immediately commenced in Palmerston stereet, so that it may become of some real use as a thoroughfare, and we hear that the telegraph wire now forming an obstruction to the free navigation of the river, will be removed, and placed higher up. A company of comedians, comprising Miss Cassy Mathews, Miss Jennie Nye, little Amy Thornton, Signor Donato, the one legged dancer, Mersrs, Wolfe, Thornton, Cripps, Ingles, and some others, arrived por Wallace from Greymouth, and are now at Charleston, where they intend playing for a few evenings. Should sufficient in-. ducem mt offer, they will thereafter appear at Westport. "One who is cooked." Your letter is crowded out of this issue. It shall appear in our next. A magisterial enquiry has been made in matters affecting the control of the Westport Gaol. The subject ia apparently of
little general interest, but doubtless any details necessary to be made public, will, in due course, be furnished by the proper authorities. Dr Bulmer, of Wellington, has been offered the appointment of surgeon to the Eeefton Hospital. The meeting at Moor and Watts' Hotel, Eeefton, on Saturday evening last, to consider the O'Conor case, was meagrely attended. Mr Ivess acted as Chairman, Dr Rockstrow, iu a speech, wherein he introduced lengthy quotations from the Nelson and Coast papers, proposed a vote of censure, which was seconded by Mr Bishop. Mr Keenan, of Charleston, condemned the Press, and moved the amendment appearing in our telegrams, which was seconded by Mr Dunn, and the Chairman declared it carried. Our correspondent's report is crowded out. A telegraph station was opened yesterday at Coromandel, in the Province of Auckland. Mails for the Australian Colonies and Uuited Kingdom, via Suez, close at Bluff to-day at 11 a.m. Telegrams should be presented two hours before mail closes. In the E M's Court yesterday, Maria Jennings was fined 203 for drunkenness, and also sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labor, under the Vagrant Act. In the Warden's Court to-day, judgment will be given in the case Harold and party v. Enricksen.
