The Westport Times. TUESDAY, JULY 9, 1872.

If the meeting on Saturday night is to be taken as a fair reflex of the state of political morality in Westport, then indeed are the people sunk to the lowest depths of political degradation. But, if, as it is reason able to presume, the disturbance was premeditated by certain individuals, incited thereto by an agency to which we need not refer ; and that others, whose more sober judgment has since condemned them; joined in the 'ruction as a mere frolic, then, with charitable forgiveness, all lovers of public order and decorum can but s>ity their neighbours, driven to -such desperate straits and questionable companionship for amusement. As involving the discussion of a question that has, .to the annoyance of all respecters of constituted authority, grievously disturbed the public mind, and Bhaken to its base any confidence heretofore reposed in political guides and mentors; the occasion and circumstance of the meeting, should have found the electors prepared to insist cm *a calm, deliberate, and impartial discussion. Failing to attain that, a wlthc'ra'.val from the room might have marked their silent contempt for all fomenters of discord. , It is useless however, to dilate upon a topic that reflects so little credit on any one concerned therein. One good' result at least has been attained thereby, which may lead to even more beneficial results hereafter. The people of Westport have shown that they can, when they choose, shake off their general apathetic indifference to affairs political, and express their opinions freely. Roused to a true sense of the political position, and eonvinced that vigorous action is necessary, an influential section of Westport residents have seized the opportunity, and now call upon their friends to meet and discuss matters of vital public importance. In this they act wisely, but for the credit of the community, let them be pi'epared at the next meeting to suppress the slightest breach of good order and good sense.
