"IN THE CAUSE OF TRUTH AND JUSTICE WE STRIVE."

(To the Editor of the Westport Times). Sik, —Eecent events have suggested to me the following observations : They may possibly serve as a mirror for reflecting the swervings from the right, and the obliquity of those from whom is 'expected an observance of upright disposition, a conformity to justice, and a correctness in all their dealings—whether social or political. We all are painfully aware that in every community are to be found creatures utterly blind to their own imperfections, being as so many fully developed embodiments of selfishness (twin-brother to dishonesty), and devoid of the slightest feeling of that consideration and respect which is owing from man to his fellow man. This principle of selfishness rules in men of every station in life (and many are they " possessed of the devil "), the difference of individual action for evil heing one of degree only, and the least hurtful of the species at its best, if not an unpleasant and thorny member, an engine for mischief always in the hands of the designing. But should this machine possess within itself the necessary intelligence and power for independent action, it then becomes a scheming, hurtful, individualism, causing dissension and spreading mischief all around. Then, once in motion, its restlessness propels it to persist in presuming, with that full assurance innate ignorance engenders, to clamourously intrude itself and its desires upon people, to not only insult their understanding and good sense by the falsehoods it utters, but also to* ignore their individuality by its importunately extravagant demands —such creatures regarding men only as objects intended for the advancement of their interest solely, and removable at their will and pleasure. The characteristics of this species are marked, and perceived by the sometimes extraordinary display of its insane attempts ("The gods first render insane those whom they wish to destroy")) at reviling and villifying the good name of tried and honorable men for its own exaltation, its unceasing efforts at overreaching the unwary, its disgraceful and scandalous betrayal of the most sacred of public trusts, and its unhesitating commital of any action, however discreditable and base, for the attainment of its object, where there may be in prospect the remotest possible chance of success. The creature is truly, " fearfully and wonderfully made," and circumstances evoke and occasionally make demands upon its versatility, when suddenly it will assume the form of an " angel of light," now dissolving in fancied innocence, now blazing in its self-righteousness, charming admiring simpletons, or even becoming a crucified martyr; but always being " all things unto all men." Now not to pursue the subject further, it is obvious the above character, or rather absence of character, is a constitution dangerous, and as a " roaring lion seeking whom he may devour," prowls to prey upon the industrious and unsuspecting ; working positive and incalculable injury to the community unto whose lot has fallen the infliction of the feeding of such a monster. It is to hoped this mirror will discover the beast, and besides reflect to every thinking man that by tolerating and excusing the faults he finds in others, he makes them his own. C.
