THE LYELL.
(To the JSditm- of the West-port Times.) Sm, —Four description of the nugget lately found on the Lyell reminded me that the finest nuggets have been found there from the earliest period of the West Coast diggings. Mr Reuben Waite, writing at the latter end of 1862, thus speaks of the Lyell and its neighborhood : " About this time a Maori named Simon discovered the Lyell creek, which, while it lasted, was a very rich diggings, and turned out some of the finest nuggets in New Zealand. There is a large manuka flat on the right bank of the Lyell, and I believe that if this was properly tried, which it never has been up to this time, it would turn out a good goldfield, I have had many opportunities of seeing it, having been across it several times, and I am of opinion that the gold found in the Lyell has come from this fla 1- . It is a made terrace, with gravel a 1 ttle below the top soil, and is of considerable extent." —Waire's Narrative of the Discovery of the West Coast Goldfields, p. 9. This hint, given 10 years ago, may possibly be turned to account at this juncture.—l am, &c, E. T.
