The claims made by the United States, which have been brought before the Arbitration Commission at Geneva, for direct losses caused by the depredations of the Alabama and other vessels alleged to have been fitted out in British porta during the civil war, amount to nearly £4,000,000. A case of animal poisoning is mentioned by the ' Carcoar Chronicle :'— A bullock died suddenly, and a portion
of the flesh was eaten by dogs, all of which died soon after. One of the men who Bkinued the beast, having a small wound on the forehead, happened to touch the spot with his hand, became infected with the poison, and died in consequence. Reflections should neyer bo cast on a plain young lady for consulting her looking-glass; she at any rate faces her difficulties.
