CHARLESTON.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

In the Resident Magistrate Court, on Thursday, Mary Ellis complained against Martin Sorrenson for assaulting her on the evening of March 18. Plaintiff stated that upon the day mentioned she went to speak to her daughter, who was keeping bad company, and while speaking to her defendant caught her by the throat and knocked her down, and struck her several times with a stick, which he had taken from her. She was accustomed to carry something in her left hand, as she was afflicted with rheumatism in that side. She gave no provocation, nor did she attempt to strike any one.

John Rowland Ellis said that when he interfered to protect his wife, defendant knocked him down.

Dr Henry stated that plaintiff had a wound on her forehead about an inch and a quarter long, which divided the scalp, apparently inflicted with a round stick ; she also complained of being bruised elsewhere, which upon examination he found to be correct.

For the defence, Mary Jones stated

that her mother was waiting on the road to beat her, when Bhe railed upon defendant for protection, who accompanied her along the road, when her mother came in a threatening manner with a stick in her hand, and defendant interfered ; she saw no blow struck.

His Worship said that there were extenuating circumstances connected, with the case, or otherwise it would be a very serious one, as there was evidence of considerable violence having been used. He inflicted a penalty of 40s and costs, or 14 days imprisonment.

Ellis v. Sorrenson. This action for assault was connected with the last. Defendant was fined 10s and costs, or four clays' imprisonment. Hurburg v. Scanlon. Claim £4 for damage done to a dam, about 30 feet of the wall having been destroyed by defendant's pigs. Judgment for £4, and 25a costs.

In the Warden Court a variety of applications were dealt with.
