MR FOX AT CHARLESTON.

In reference to the money apportioned to Nelson, to which Mr Fox's attention was called by Mr O'Conor at the late meeting in Westport, Mr Fox stated at the Charleston meeting that tho sum was about £24.000. This being borrowed money, bearing interest, could not be spent in making petty roads, but on reproductive works. There had been consultations with Mr Curtis, the goldfields representatives, and the engineers on the expenditure of £24,000 in the goldfields district \ and the connection of the Buller with tho Grey through the two valleys was the conclusion arrived at. There waa

no doubt that this would be a permant and reproductive work. Mr Dobaon bad estimated that the road would run through a district containing 40,000 acres of agricultural land. On the subject of the sum of £6OOO, which Mr Curtis was said to be desirous of withdrawing and expending on the Waimeas, Mr Fox said, that it was not the intention of Government to have it expended in that manner ; and it was contrary to intention that any of the money appropriated to the Nelson South-west Goldfieklg should be expended north of the northern boundary of the Buller electoral district.
