THE NORTHERN TERRACES.

(from our own correspondent). The heavy rains on Monday caused very heavy floods in the various creeks on the Northern Terraces, which were higher than have been known for several years. Giles Creek was so much swollen as to cause the torrent to break through into the old bed, cutting a deep channel near the township, but fortunately without doing any damage. Several very large landslips have also taken place on various parts of the terraces, but have been felt more severely in the neighbourhood of Giles Creek. One, consisting of several hundred tons of mullock, fell with great force opposite to the township, and above Graham and. party's tunnel, carrying away everything before it, comprising washing boxes, tramway (used for drawing up timber to the tunnel), timber, etc., etc. It will take Graham and party four or five Weeks to get their plant in order •again, causing considerable loss, as they have saved nothing. It very fortunately happened that the men had knocked off work ten minutes before the slip took place, or loss of life would have been beyond doubt added to the list of casualties. I have nothing to mention respecting mining matters, everything being very quiet. The majority of the parties north of Giles's are now prospecting on their several leases and extended claims, many of whom expect to strike the " metal" in three or four Weeks. It is expected the result will prove very satisfactory. On the Calf■donian, German, and Giles Terraces a few parties are on gold, and others ■are putting in new tunnels for another lead.
