CHARLESTON.

(from our own correspondent). The funeral of George Hall who died in the hospital on Friday morning, took place an Sunday at 2.30 p.m. A large concourse of people attended to pay a tribute of respect to the deceased, who was much esteemed by all classes. The Sports and Races Committee are actively pushing their canvass ahead. They have reduced their number to seven of an active committee, it having been considered a more efficacious way of working than with the numerous committee as at first proposed. Mr R. Gilmer having resigned the position of secretary, Mr Hugh Jones has been appointed in his stead. The Hibernian Society has determined upon celebrating its next anniversary which falls upon the first of January, by a grand ball and banquet. The Star Minstrels and Polygrapbic company performed at the Casino de Venise on Saturday evening, to one of the most crowded houses ever witnessed in Charleston. The entetainment was such as fully merited the hearty applause which it received, and maintained the high reputation of the company. At the close of the performance Mr Bromley on the part of company acknowledged the support they had received, and announced the probability of their again visiting Charleston shortly. At a recent meeting of the Nelson Board of Education, it was resolved, that the New School, (St. Patrick's), Charleston, should be subsidised the same as other West Coast schools, if the Board contiuued to have control of the Fund. The committee have advertised tor a master, and have re. ceived applications for the office from Victoria, New Zealand, Tasmania, and also one from America, from a party with whom some of the committee are personally acquainted, and upon that gentleman the choice has fallen. Instructions to that effect have been forwarded by the outgoing mail, so that he may be expected to arrive early in the forthcoaiiug year. Tnomas Edwards, who was injured at Brighton on Tuesday Inst, is still in a precarious state although under the circumstances his condition must be considered favourable.
