For some" time . past the lamps burning in front; of the hotels have been surreptitiously abstracted duriug the night, and last week the lamps were taken licensed house of Miss Dorgan and from that of Mr Grant. It having been reported to the police they instituted enquiries, and on Friday last' an old offender named John M.'Laujjhlin was charged with the theft. Two lamps were produced by the police, which they had received from a ■woman named Kenny, to whom they had been given by prisoner. The lamps produced were similar to some lost by Mr M'Heron, a publican on the beach, for whom the prisoner had bjjen ...working. . The police applied foe acreffland;, which was granted until Monday;. A public meeting was held at Wei tzel's Hotel oft Friday evening, for the purpose of forming a Committee to collect subscriptions and arrange races and sports, to be held at Christmas. Upon the motion of Mr Behan, Mr Dwan was voted to the chair. The Chairman said the meeting had been convened by Mr Charles Weitzei, who had acted under l the instructions of others. The sum of £46 4«t had already been subscribed by tlie lady publicans of Charleston, the majority of whom had contributed £5 5s each. Be presumed the object of the meeting' was to get up good l races and sports, in : order; to be'beforeHhe Westport people. D'r -sHHVyar said that Mr Behan - and' he:/'«'' collected the amount stated by the Chairman from female holders of'pnbllcan's licenses, who had all readily. Mr Weitzei stated 4hat he had called the meeting- ia order to be, before the Westport people, as last year the races wore held first in Westport, and a great portion «f- the Charleston people went there, on account of which he estimated that £3,000 had boen spent in Westport, which might have been spent in Charleston. Scanlon, M'Beth, James, Tait, Perrett, Shepherd, J. Allen, Shapter, Grant, arid P« Bear./ Dr. Hillyar was appointed hon. treasurer and Mr R. Gilmer hon. secretary. It was decided that the 26th and 27th December were the days upon which the races were to be held. A vote of thanks to Dr Hillyar for the prompt manner in which he had acted in commencing the collection, and a vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings. His Honor Judge "Ward Bat in the Bankruptcy jurisdiction of the District Court on Friday last, when two insolvents, named Henry Sands and Sullivan, Obtained their discharge, there being no opposition offered.
