NELSON DIOCESAN SYNOD.
The Synod met at three o'clock on Thursday, .and with the exception of an hour's adjournment sat till one o'clock the following morning. On the motion of Mr Barnicoat, seconded by'Mr, Person, it was resolved:—"That the Synod has heard with great apprise, and regret the. proposed exclusiou of clergymen of any denomination from the office of Inspector of Schools' in the proposed 'Government Bill, inasmuch as it is a violation of the complete, separation between Church'and State'in the colony. On.the motion of Mr Hunter Brown who introduced his resolution in a long and interesting speech, it was resolved :—" That this Synod, fully responds to his : Lordship the Bishop's utterances on the subject of the Maori Mission, in his' opening address • recognises the duty , incumbent .ou the Church in New Zealand of assisting the Maori Mission, and pledges itself to aid the Bishop,in bringing this matter before the' Church,' in order to obtain help in men or money for the work of the Mission. • ' • ■ ''■ ■' • The Eev. C. O. Mules moved—1. That this Synod recognises the duty of uniting as far as possible, with the titherb ranches of Christ's Church, in promot-, ! ing the growth of that Church, ... as a whole and of its individual, ■ • members. 2. That to this end ; it is willing in : fchmly-'populated districts permit its places of worship to be used by the ministers and preachers duly recognised by ! • ; the WesTeyan Conference where the Trust Deed makes no ex-; I press stipulation to.,.,the contrary ; provided— i ..
Lj That such use be sanctioned by the Bishop of the diocese, or his Commissary."' , 2. That the consent of the Minister and Churchwardens (if any) of the said district be first obtained.
3, That the ordinary control of the building,'-s6 far as respecting' tho time of service, &c, be detained in the hands of the Minister'and Churchwardens f and alj questions in. dispute be referred to the Bishop for decision. 4. Thai each Minister or rreacher using the said place of Worship) shall have signed the following: declaration", and have received the Bishop's, license (or permission), in writing : " I, the undersigned, •' ' do hereby solemnly declare that du- .; .ring my ; . mjuisjratiqns, ,in placqs of worship to which I may. access in consequence of per- : mission given by ; the Synod of. the Church of England ,in, the Bio v cese of Nelson, I will not affirm or- teach anything contrary to the "Word of God, and the doctrine
and discipline*of the Ckp.cli of England, as now set forth in the ] formularies now in use in the Church of England in New Zea- ■ land." 5. That the. Abo vemonfcioned license (or permission,)may at any time be revoked in any individual case or cases by the Bishop of the Diocese. A warm debate ensued when the second resolution was strongly op. posed, and eventually the mover with, drew his motion, at the,same.time expressing his intention of 'bringing it > A forward again at the next meeting of the'SynSd; ""• *j The Synod then adjourned until eleven p'clock on Friday "when the ' session Was" brought to a close. 1 ']
