CHARLESTON.

(prom our own correspondent.) In the Resident' Magistrate's Court on Friday last, Michael Shanahan sought to recover from Maurice Murphy the sum of £23 17s 4d. Mr Shapter appeared for the plaintiff. Shanahan stated} that the debt had been contracted at Addison's Flat, in the latter end of 1867 and beginning of 1868 Defendant filed a set-off of £lB 4a, and denied the debt. The Magistr.it:} after hearing the statements of both parties/which were extremely contradictory, gave a verdict for plaintiff for £7 3s 6d and costs.

Mr Broad appeared in Charleston in a new capacity on Friday last, namely—as auctioneer, to sell a coal mining lease formerly granted to John Behan, but which had become forfeited, aud was sold by order of the Commasioner of Crown Lands, from whom Mr Broad read an authority to sell. The local auctioneer, Mr Dwan, placed his licence before Mr Broad and offered his services, to sell the property. Mr Broad would not accept of his services, whereupon Mr Dwan stated his intention of trying Mr Broad's right to act as auctioneer. The lease was put up at the upset priee of £22 and after some sharp competition amongst the rival coal merchants, was knocked down to Mr Michael v Scanlon for the sum of £45. The premises at the corner of Princes street and Rotten row lately occupied by Mr Farrell, chemist, and stock were Dwan and Co., on Saturday last, for the sum of £l4O, Dr Henry being the purchaser.
