The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. In the cause of Truth and Justice we strive. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1871.
The Bank of New Zealand, Westport, shipped by the steamer Charles Edward on Saturday, for transhipment at Greymouth, 7710z. 16dwt. 18grs. of gold, the export duty upon which amounted to £96 9s Bd. The Eeefton mail was despatched from Westport on Sunday morning. During the past ten days whitebait have been obtained in abundance in the Bnller river. Dr Giles roturned from the Inangahua on Saturday. The news from that locality is highly encouraging. Anderson and party are obtaining very promising stone, which is I
likely to exceed in richness any previously obtained by them. No. 2 North, on Adam Smith's line of reef, are also getting first-class stone. The reef on Shiels's line has been proved highly payable for a length of 1200 ft. and it. has been exposed to a depth of 135 ft. In addition to this, it is authoritatively stated that fresh reofs have been discovered.
A passion for praet : cal jokes has recently exhibited itself in Westport, being illustrated early on Sunday morning last in the disfigurement of a lamp-post fronting the Empire Hotel, Gladstone-street. The taste for removing door-plates, wrenching knockers and bell-handles, extinguishing street lights, &c, became too stale a joke even with the past generation; so that it no longer possesses the relish of novelty to render it less unpalatable. The Rev. Father Hallam, who during the past four years has had charge of the spiritual welfare of the Catholic body in Charleston, arrived in Westport by coaeh on Saturday last, en route for Auckland. The advanced years of the reverend gentleman render Auckland with its genial climate a more suitable field for bis future .Ttinistration, in addition, to which, he will renew the pleasant associations gained by a twelve years 1 residence in that city.
The following telegram has been received by Mr Donne from the Provincial Treasurer contradicting an assertion in the " Grey Argus" that all public wcrks on the Goldfields would be stopped pending the uncertainty of the Government's intentions in respect to the proposed severance of the Province-—■" Works not suspended. Only fresh cortracts are avoided, and this purely from financial changes. The stoppage applies to the whole of the province, and not to the goldfields only. The sole cause has been probable reductions in the capitation allowance of the province, and not in consequence of Harrison's resolutions."
Mr fell expects to have two cargo b->ats ready towards the close of the week to commence operations in transporting Mace and Dixon's quartz crushing machinery to the Inangahua.
We understand that an information has been laid by a Charleston auctioneer against Mr Broad, charging him with aoting illegally as an auctioneer, he having no license. The action has arisen out of the sale of a coal mine, Mr Lroad acting under instructions from the Crown Lands' office. Mr Shapter is retained by the informant, and Mr Pitt will proceed to Charleston to conduct the defence.
Tho 5.6. Kennedy was to leave Nelson for Weetport to-day.
We learn from the Postmaster that the Charles Edward will leave for Nelson this afternoon, carrying tho outward San Francisco mail. In another column she is advertised to sail this morning at seven o'clock, and no intimation has been received from her agent of any alteration in her appointed hour of iieparture. Capt. Daniels, of the steamer Wallabi, was fined Is and costs, at Greymouth on the 18th inst., for having neglected to lodge the usual notice of sailing with the Postmaster. Mr Perkins appeared for tho complainant, and statedthat it was not desired to press the charge, as it was conceded that the omission resulted purely from an oversight.
